Buying a walking pad in 2026: why the running surface width is the deciding factor

Sebastian Funke, Inhaber von VALENESS

VALENESS Walking Pad im Einsatz unter einem Stehschreibtisch im Homeoffice

Walking pads are sold on speed, motor power and noise level. The figure that makes the biggest difference in everyday use is rarely near the top of the spec sheet: the width of the walking surface. It determines whether you are still walking comfortably after twenty minutes or subconsciously concentrating on not stepping over the edge.

Why width matters more than length

When you walk, your feet do not land on a single line. Step width – the lateral distance between the centres of the feet – is typically between 8 and 12 cm in adults. Add the width of the foot itself, around 10 cm in shoe size 43. On paper, a normal gait therefore needs about 30 cm.

That sounds like plenty of margin on a 39 cm belt. In practice, the margin is missing: anyone typing, reading or making calls while walking does not stay in the middle but drifts. On a narrow surface, the result is that you correct your gait instead of letting it happen. That is precisely what tires you out.

Length, by contrast, is uncritical as long as you are not jogging. For walking, 100 cm is enough; the 120 cm offered by some models only pays off from around 7 km/h – a speed most walking pads do not even reach.

What the walking surface costs: the market comparison

Street prices and manufacturer specifications, as of September 2026:

Model Price Walking surface width
Superun Walking Pad €159,99 39 cm
Sperax Walking Pad €199,99 39 cm
VALENESS Walking Pad €239,99 42 cm
Sportstech sWalk €249,00 40 cm
Kingsmith WalkingPad Z1 approx. €309,00 40 cm
Sportstech sWalk Plus €339,00 39 cm
Kuipers Home Office K1 €419,00 44 cm
Kingsmith WalkingPad A1 Pro €449,00 40.8 cm
Kingsmith WalkingPad R2 €579,00 44 cm

The pattern is clear: between 160 and 450 euros, the walking surface is almost consistently 39 to 40 cm. More width usually costs considerably more – otherwise you only get beyond 42 cm from around 420 euros upwards.

The direct price neighbour is particularly striking: at 249 euros, the Sportstech sWalk is almost level, but offers 40 cm. And the Kingsmith A1 Pro at 449 euros does not reach 42 cm with its 40.8 cm, even though it costs almost twice as much.

The difference between 39 and 42 cm sounds small. It is one and a half centimetres more on each side – roughly one extra foot width of tolerance before you feel the edge.

The second point that is often overlooked: the surface underneath

In a rented flat, it is not the motor that determines whether there will be complaints, but the impact sound transmitted downwards. Every step transfers structure-borne noise through the housing into the floor, and a concrete ceiling passes it on to the flat below. A machine can be quiet at 40 dB in the room and still be clearly audible for your neighbour.

A damping mat decouples the machine from the floor and removes exactly this path. It also prevents the pad from creeping across laminate or parquet, and protects the floor covering from pressure marks.

With most manufacturers it is an accessory and costs extra. The VALENESS Walking Pad comes with a precisely fitted non-slip mat – and precisely fitted is the decisive part: a mat that is too small only damps under the centre, while the feet beside it rest directly on the floor.

What else to look out for

Incline. Without incline, walking stays walking. Even a few degrees raise your pulse noticeably without increasing the pace – in a home office, the only way to turn a side activity into a workout.

Overall height. Machines up to about 14 cm fit under a bed or sofa. Anything taller needs a permanent spot – and, experience shows, gets used less often.

Foldable or not. Folding mechanisms cost stability and add height. If you are going to store the pad flat anyway, you do not need one; if you want to stand it upright in a corner, you do.

Load capacity. The figure refers to walking, not running. If you are close to the limit, allow yourself some margin.

At 13 cm in height it disappears under a bed or sofa, and the transport wheels are integrated. The vibration plate is a second function in the same machine – without another device taking up space in the room.

Honestly, where it does not fit: if you want to jog, this is the wrong choice – 6 km/h is the limit, the machine is built for walking. If you weigh more than 120 kg or want to store the pad upright in a corner, you should look for a foldable model with a higher load limit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum width the walking surface should have?

For walking alone, 40 cm is a sensible lower limit. If you work at the same time and therefore pay less attention to your line, 42 cm makes for a noticeably more relaxed experience.

Is 100 cm of length enough?

For walking, yes. Additional length only pays off when jogging, which walking pads are not built for anyway.

Do I need a mat underneath?

In a flat with neighbours below you: yes. It is the single most effective measure against impact sound and at the same time prevents slipping on smooth floors.

How loud is a walking pad?

Around 40 dB in operation, comparable to quiet conversation level. The motor is rarely the problem – the footsteps are.

What does the incline achieve?

At the same pace, energy consumption rises noticeably. If you alternate between sitting and standing while working, it gives you a workout without having to walk faster.

Can the machine stay under the desk permanently?

Yes, at 13 cm high it is not in the way there. If you need the space, you can simply roll it away.
